Security Officers trained at the Awareness Level, are among the first to witness or discover an incident involving criminal activity or terrorism and to initiate the emergency response sequence. In this role they will need the following competencies which they can acquire through this training:
  • An understanding of what terrorism is and the risks associated with such an incident
  • An understanding of the potential outcomes associated with a terrorist incident
  • The ability to recognize the presence of, and identify, criminal activity
    or terrorism in an emergency
  • An understanding of the role of the security officer and first responders as it relates to components of an emergency
  • Response plans and references, including NIMS, the NRP, and the
    North American Emergency Response Guidebook
  • The ability to quickly assess a scene and realize the need for additional resources,
    and to make appropriate notifications for the needed assistance
  • The ability to self-protect, keeping Security Officer and civilian safety as a priority
